Diversity of web sites: hindrance or richness?

As we have been setting up this scratchpad, I have had to think hard about the usefulness of such a site. We now have an abundance of web sites with essentially the same information, ie repetition galore. My own thinking is starting to go along these lines: we have the Tree of Life pages (http://tolweb.org) as an excellent place to store information about phylogenetic relationships of taxa (including Nymphalidae). We have the newly inaugurated Encyclopedia of Life (http://www.eol.org) as a potential place for species pages.

Nymphalidae Scratchpad on it's way

Just a bit of information for anybody who happens to stumble upon this scratchpad. We (Niklas Wahlberg and Carlos Peña) have started to build up the scratchpad since the beginning of February 2008. At this stage we are still learning how to manage the site and are putting up the skeleton. Once we have the skeleton up, we will be announcing the scratchpad on the Lepidoptera EDIT mailing list. If you want to help with building the skeleton, just register yourself as a user!
